One out of three patients develop serious complications after major surgery. These include severe inflammatory reactions, secondary infections, and multi-organ failure, which claim the lives of more than 2,000 people each year in Germany. As a result, our healthcare system incurs annual costs of a minimum of 116 million euros.
We are researchers at the University Hospital Bonn and are developing a diagnostic test that identifies patients at increased risk of postoperative complications. Based on the results, physicians can consider alternative treatment options at an early stage.
